NBISD hosts Special Olympics Track & Field event

NBISD hosts Special Olympics Track & Field event on March 27, 2019 at Unicorn Stadium

For the second year in a row, NBISD hosted their own Special Olympics Track and Field event at Unicorn Stadium on March 27 for their athletes.

The Opening Ceremonies included appearances by the NBHS JROTC, Band, Choir, Cheerleaders and Dance Team. The ceremony concluded with a Torch Run through the stadium with help from the Special Olympians and a group of law enforcement personnel from New Braunfels Police Department, DPS Highway Patrol and the New Braunfels Fire Department.

The competitive portion of the event was held immediately after the Opening Ceremonies and included individual running events, a wheelchair race and unified relay event. The field events included: standing long jump, shot-put, tennis ball toss, softball toss, and javelin throw.

The “young athletes” that are ages 3-7 also competed in their own obstacle course created for their age group.

“In years past, the students from NBISD traveled to other schools across the region to compete,” said Catherine Archer, NBISD Special Education coordinator. “The decision to host a local event allows for more community participation and for more students to participate in the event.”

These student-athletes will also be competing in the Area competition on April 13 with hopes of qualifying to the state competition scheduled for May 2-5. Both events will be held at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio.

“We are so grateful to everyone that volunteered to make this year’s event a success,” said Archer.

Besides track and field, the athletes also compete in bowling and tennis. For the first time this year, NBISD is competing in basketball.
