Updated: Feb. 1, 2017

A total of four students and two teachers from New Braunfels ISD along with members from the Technology Department participated in the Texas Capitol Schoolhouse event on Jan. 30 at the Texas State Capitol. Texas Capitol Schoolhouse Foundation sponsors the event to provide an opportunity for students and teachers from across Texas to demonstrate the educational technology being used in classrooms everyday.

Representing NBISD were fourth-graders Ned Niland and Natalie Huckaby along with their math teacher Sue Hardaway from Carl Schurz Elementary. They demonstrated the use Digital Notebooks in their math class. NBHS Seniors Olivia Esqueda and Eugene May along with their teacher Edwin Braun from New Braunfels High School also attended to demonstrate the Virtual Reality projects they created in their 3D Design and Animation class.

A total of 11 school districts and 15 schools were part of this year’s event. The students and teachers demonstrated to the members of the Legislature how they are using and integrating technology in their classrooms. Each school district had a table set up in the Texas State Capitol Basement Rotunda on Jan. 30 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. to share their project with the Schoolhouse visitors.

"We are excited to have been invited to take place in this showcase of curriculum and technology at the State Capitol,” said Matt Jones, NBISD executive director of technology “Our students and teachers are doing awesome things in the classroom and NBISD participating in this event is further proof of that.”

The delegation from NBISD also had the opportunity to meet with their elected representatives and attended a special ceremony in the Texas House and Senate recognizing the students, teachers and schools.

“The participating schools clearly demonstrate their effective day-to-day use of educational technology in teaching their students and preparing them for careers in the high-tech world,” said Dr. Deborah Jolly, the Schoolhouse organizer and Executive Director. “Visitors to the Capitol will see and experience technology currently in use by the best in Texas classrooms.”

Other participating districts included: Coleman ISD, Coppell ISD, Denton ISD, Deer Park ISD, Klein ISD, Ysleta ISD, San Saba ISD, Pasadena ISD, Temple ISD and the Texas School for the Deaf.
