New Braunfels High School science classes attend unique seminar

Distinguished biologist and frog expert Dr. Tyrone Hayes visited New Braunfels High School students on Feb. 2 and Feb. 3. Hayes held seminars in the high school’s auditorium for all AP science, aquatic science and environmental science classes.

Hayes is a professor of integrative biology at University of California Berkeley. A world traveler and once a National Geographic-sponsored researcher, Hayes is an expert in developmental endocrinology.

“The science seminars were vital to increase students' understanding on how a simple observation in nature can lead to significant discoveries,” said Denise Ortiz, NBHS science teacher.

The seminars complimented curriculum studied last fall in the high school’s aquatic and AP environmental sciences classes.

“I believe the seminars provided students with a meaningful connection between scientific concepts learned in the classroom and a real world application,” Ortiz added.

Ortiz hopes the seminars also gave students the experience of a traditional college seminar class which is in their near future.
