NBHS's Micah Stark named National Merit Finalist
03/01/2017

New Braunfels ISD is proud to announce Micah Stark, a senior at New Braunfels High School, has been named as a National Merit® Finalist through the National Merit® Scholarship Program.

Micah Stark has attended NBHS for the past four years. Stark is a two-year member of the National Honor Society, a two-year member of the Science Olympiad team and a four -year member of the NBHS Band currently serving as the current Brass Captain.  Stark is also a member of the Boy Scouts of America and a two-year member of the Youth Orchestra of San Antonio.

“The teachers I had my junior year prepared us for the test,” said Stark. “My accomplishment is more a testament to them than it is to me.”

When asked that he would say to another student aspiring to achieve this same level of distinction, he said “Test scores do matter, so prepare as much as you can. Even if you don’t receive distinctions, you will have bettered yourself from the preparation.”

Stark plans to attend Northwestern University or Indiana University to study music performance with hopes of becoming an orchestral musician. He is the son of Denise Nelson and David Stark.

The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) – a test that serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.6 million entrants each year – and by meeting published program entry/participation requirements.

The national scholarship programs recognize students from all over the country for outstanding academic achievement by making a high score on the PSAT/NMSQT®. Students in the National Merit® Program are selected from the highest achievers and designated as either a Commended Students or Semifinalist in the first round. Only semifinalists advance to the final round to be named National Merit Finalist. In February, approximately 15,000 Semifinalists are notified that they have advanced to Finalist standing. Out of the Finalists, students are chosen to receive Merit Scholarships based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments – without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin or religious preference.
