New Braunfels ISD has received applications from three candidates seeking election for two open seats on the NBISD Board of Trustees. Two candidates – Jose “Joe” Terrones and Michael Calta – have filed for the District 2 position and Matthew Sargent has filed for the District 4 position. The school board election date is set for May 6, 2017.

District 2 Candidates

Jose “Joe” Terrones is a retired Army Officer with 25 years of distinguished military service.  After his retirement from the Army he continues to serve by working for the Department of Defense as a Civil Service Federal Employee. Terrones has a three post-graduate degrees and is a member of Holy Family Catholic Church ACTS group, a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW), Disable American Veterans (DAV) and a life member of the Grand Lodge of Texas, A.F. & A.M.

Terrones decided to run for the school board to make a difference for kids, the community, and to help shape the future of education in NBISD.

He and his wife, Barbara, have two children attending NBISD. They have resided in New Braunfels since 2005.

Michael Calta is a Real Estate Broker/Investor that moved to New Braunfels six years ago. From 2004 to 2010, he served as a school board member for the Chino Valley Unified School District and held the office of President, Vice President and Clerk.

Calta decided to run for school board out of gratitude for the way NBISD has treated their children that attend or have attended NBISD schools. With the position open in District 2, he felt it was time to offer his experience and efforts by giving back to NBISD as a trustee. He and his wife, Gena, have three children - one NBHS graduate and two attending NBISD schools.

District 4 Candidate (unopposed)

Matthew Sargent is a Project Manager for a small construction company and has been a resident of NBISD for nearly 10 years. He has a degree in electrical engineering from Texas Tech. He currently serves as a volunteer with the Walnut Springs Elementary Robotics Club and Competitive Robot Team (FLL). This is his fourth year coaching an FLL team and his first year coaching an NBISD team.

He decided to run for school board to make a difference and help improve education. He felt that being on the school board was the best way to assist the community and the students of NBISD. As a trustee, he wants NBISD to continue its path of excellence. He and his wife, Lisa, have four children - three NBISD students and one incoming-kindergartner.
