Unicorn seniors sign letters of intent to play college sports

New Braunfels High School held signing ceremony on April 12, 2017 at the school as part of National College Signing Day. A total of ten (10) Unicorn athletes will sign with the college of their choice. Their family, teammates and coaches will join these student-athletes for the official signing ceremony.



 Derek Albers signed a letter of intent to play football at the University of Central Arkansas located in Conway,  Arkansas. UCA is a Division I university in the Southland Conference.  Albers athletic honors include being  named 2nd Team All-district honorable mention and he was selected to participate in the 2017 HEB All-Star  game. He is the son of Steve Albers and Gail Albers.


Caleb Brown received an athletic and academic scholarship to swim at Oklahoma Christian University in Edmond, Oklahoma. Oklahoma Christian is a Division II university in the Heartland Conference. Brown’s swimming honors include being a varsity swimmer all four years; 1st Team All-District all four years; Regional Finalist all four years; TISCA Finalist all four years; Freshman MVP; Sectionals Qualifier senior year; School Record holder in 50 and 200 breast, 200 and 400 medley relay and 800 free relay. He was also the Team Captain his senior year. Brown is the son of Steve and Patty Brown.  


Nadya Fernandez  received an athletic scholarship and will be playing softball for Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas. Lyon College is a Division I school in the NAIA, American Midwest Conference. Nadya was the Co-Captain of the Firecrackers-AC (now Texas Pride) team and led them to a National Title in the Summer of 2016. She is the daughter of Veronica and Javier Mendez and Abdali and Jessi Fernandez.


Trenton Leffingwell signed a letter of intent to play golf at McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas. McLennan Community College is an NJCAA Division 1 college in the NJCAA Southwest Conference. Leffingwell’s athletic honors include being named the #18 ranked player in Texas Class of 2017 by Golfweek; four time Team District Champion, 2016 UIL State Qualifier, Top 20 in Optimist International at PGA National in Florida and he averaged a 74.2 stroke average this year. He is the son of Kelli Leffingwell Bonacci and Don Bonacci.



MJ Martinez signed a letter of intent to play football at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor located in Belton, Texas. Mary Hardin-Bayolor is a Division III university in the Townsend Conference. His athletic honors being on the collegepromotersusa.com highlights. Martinez is the son of Mike and Annette Martinez.


Bryce Miller received a full athletic scholarship and will be playing baseball for Blinn College in Brenham, Texas. Blinn is a Division 1 Junior College  in the Region XIV Athletic Conference. Miller’s athletic accomplishments include being a three year starter; 2016 1st team All-District Outfield; 2016 San Antonio High School Baseball All-Star; 2016 Team Texas Selection; and 2015 and 2016 Academic All-District. Miller is the son of Bill Miller and Denise Miller.



Gabriella Omichi Quintero received a scholarship to play softball at Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas. Jarvis Christian is a Division I college in the NAIA Conference. Her athletic honors include being a three year  varsity softball letterman. She also participated in the Next Generation Travel Team. She is the daughter of Dennis and Donna Quintero.



Shelby Tate signed a letter of intent to play beach volleyball at Texas A&M University - Kingsville in Kingsville, Texas. TAMU Kingsville is classified for beach volleyball as a Division I University and is Independent in Conference. Her athletic achievements include being named Indoor volleyball Regional Quarter Finalist her freshman and senior year, Co-Captain, All-District junior and senior year; Academic All-District all four years, Bi-District Finalist junior year, and Area Finalist sophomore year. Tate is the daughter of Brandon and Tracy Tate.



Cailey Young received an academic scholarship along with the Bulldog Scholarship to play volleyball at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas. TLU is a Division III university in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Young’s athletic accomplishments include being named Academic All-District four years in a row; Academic All-State senior year; Texas High School Coaches Association and Texas Army National Guard Academic All-State 2nd team; American Volleyball Coaches Association Award for Excellence Honorable Mention 27-6A Team 2014-2015 and 2015-2016. She also received Academic All-District honors three years in a row for Track & Field and was Area Qualifier in Shot Put for 2016. She is the daughter of Judy and Lester Young.



Leilani Vital signed a letter of intent to wrestle at King University in Bristol, Tennessee. King University is a Division II university in the Carolinas Conference. Vital’s athletic honors include being named four time District Champion; two time All-Region; Regional Champion; three time State Qualifier; two time State bronze medalist; 2017 THSCA Academic All-State Wrestler 2nd team and she claims 131 career victories. She also competed in off-season Freestyle wrestling being named two time Freestyle State Champion and two time member of the Texas Women’s National Team. She is the daughter of Sheri May Vital, Jose Vital and Marie Rubalcaba.
