NBISD residents elect Michael Calta for District 2 seat

The residents of New Braunfels ISD elected Michael Calta as Trustee for Single-Member District No. 2 during the election held on May 6. The race included two candidates – Michael Calta and Jose “Joe” Terrones – vying for the open seat on the NBISD Board of Trustees. Calta received 89 votes (60.14 percent) and Terrones received 59 votes (39.86 percent). A total of 148 votes were cast in the election or 2.07 percent of the 7,190 registered voters in District 2.

Michael Calta, District 2 Board MemberMichael Calta is a Real Estate Broker/Investor that moved to New Braunfels six years ago. He is currently serving as the Vice Chair of the NBISD Facilities Planning Committee and as the Board President of The Oasis at Lake Dunlap HOA. From 2004 to 2010, he served as a school board member for the Chino Valley Unified School District and held the office of President, Vice President and Clerk.

Calta decided to run for school board out of gratitude for the way NBISD has treated their children that attend or have attended NBISD schools. With the position open in District 2, he felt it was time to offer his experience and efforts by giving back to NBISD as a trustee. He and his wife, Gena, have three children - one NBHS graduate and two attending NBISD schools.

The NBISD will also have another new board member that will be sworn in with Calta at the next monthly Board meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. on May 15. Matthew Sargent ran unopposed for the Single-Member District 4 seat and was declared elected on April 17. Both candidates are filling seats left open by Rigo Montero (District 2) and Joe Hassmann (District 4) that decided not to run for reelection after serving multiple terms each.

Matthew Sargent, NBISD District 4 Board MemberMatthew Sargent is a Project Manager for a small construction company and has been a resident of NBISD for nearly 10 years. He has a degree in electrical engineering from Texas Tech. He currently serves as a volunteer with the Walnut Springs Elementary Robotics Club and Competitive Robot Team (FLL). This is his fourth year coaching an FLL team and his first year coaching an NBISD team.

He decided to run for school board to make a difference and help improve education. He felt that being on the school board was the best way to assist the community and the students of NBISD. As a trustee, he wants NBISD to continue its path of excellence. He and his wife, Lisa, have four children - three NBISD students and one incoming-kindergartner.
