2017 Regional Jazz Band members from New Branfels High School

Members of the New Braunfels High School (NBHS) Mighty Unicorn Band participated in the Regional Jazz Band competition held on Sept. 16 at Johnson High School in San Antonio. A total of 16 musicians auditioned for the region jazz band with a total of six earning a spot in the ensemble and five named alternates.

The following musicians auditioned and earned the following positions:

Saxophones: Hayden Hardaway (Alto), Israel Vargas (Alto, 1st Alternate), Collin Schlather (Tenor)

Trumpet: Thomas Shafer, Josh Harrison (1st Alternate), Jimmy Lanik (2nd Alternate)

Trombones: Jason Wheat, Devin McMurtry-Badillo (1st Alternate)

Rhythm: Joseph Pickett (Piano), Lucy Muir (Piano, 1st Alternate) JT Chapman (Drumset)

“For the first time in the history of the jazz program, there will be an NBHS student in every single section of the region jazz band,” said David Eckert, NBHS band director. “This has been an unspoken goal of mine since starting the jazz program ten years ago and I couldn’t be more proud. All of the students were well prepared and represented NBHS with the utmost dignity and pride.”

Hardaway, Shafer, Wheat, Pickett and Chapman have all advanced to the Area level of competition and recorded their audition pieces this week for the All-State Jazz Band. The announcement for those that were selected for the All-State Jazz Band will be made some time in mid-November. The regional band performance is scheduled for Feb. 3 at Johnson High School.
