Klein Road Elementary staff volunteers at Food Bank

Klein Road Elementary staff volunteer at the New Braunfels Food Bank (11.20.2017)

On Nov. 20, a total of 20 Klein Road Elementary staff along with two of their family members volunteered their time at the New Braunfels Food Bank.

The team spent two hours unloading boxes from crates, sorting food according to categories and stocking the pantry (their mini grocery store). It was hard work and many stated that they were sore the following morning but all agreed that it was rewarding to see just how much they were able to accomplish in such as short amount of time.

According to the Food Bank’s manager-in-charge, their efforts helped feed 186 people in 83 families with just their two hours of community service.

“I was deeply touched,“ said Ida Smylie, Assistant Principal at Klein Road Elementary. “The Holidays are always a special time for giving and being thankful. I encourage every one to look for ways to give to the communities around us and to consider making a donation (to a nonprofit) instead of a white elephant gift that often goes unwanted. We learned that just $1 could feed seven families.”

The idea to volunteer can from one of the Klein Road employees, Anna Sauceda. Her coworker, Kim Cary, went into action and made all of the arrangements for the group. Both serve on the campus Climate Committee that was created to boost the morale of the campus, plan fun activities and oversee the recognition of the staff.

There is talk amongst the KRE staff members of going to help again and possibly scheduling a drive for the community.
