12/11/2017

Cadet First Lieutenant Dylan Paine, a NBHS senior and vice captain of the MCJROTC marksmanship team, is moving on to the Service National Tournament to be held in Anniston, Ala., on Feb. 16-18, 2018.

For the second year in a row, the New Braunfels High School (NBHS) Marine Corps JROTC (MCJROTC) marksmanship team had one of its members qualify to compete at the national level.

Cadet First Lieutenant Dylan Paine, a NBHS senior and vice captain of the MCJROTC marksmanship team, is moving on to the Service National Tournament to be held in Anniston, Ala., on Feb. 16-18, 2018.

Paine earned his spot after scoring 265 out of a possible 300 points in this year's MCJROTC Sporter Class Marksmanship Competition. He ranked 37 out of 1047 competitors.

The marksmanship team is composed of eight NBHS MCJROTC students from grades 9-12. To join the team, students are required to try out at the beginning of each semester. Up to 30 students may try out at a time, making the process competitively selective.

Equipped with air rifles, the students spend the semester participating in the national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs.

During competitions, each team member shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions - prone, standing and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the team member’s total.
