Fifth-graders from Lamar Elementary participated in a Thanksgiving-themed, project-based learning activity during the month of November.

The students from all three classes were challenged to figure out whether a fully prepared Thanksgiving meal was more economical than buying ingredients and cooking from scratch.

Students used their math and critical thinking skills to calculate the cost for each scenario. From their findings, they decided what type of meal to pitch to their principal in order to receive the funds to actually have the meal during the week before Thanksgiving.

For their pitch, the students created videos describing their plans. Principal Danielle Taylor and Assistant Principal Jennifer Hufty watched the videos and determined the best pitch.

During lunch on Nov. 17, the students prepared their feast and enjoyed it together as a big group in Lamar’s outdoor learning space.
