Elementary students incorporate iPads into P.E. class

Students at Carl Schurz Elementary are incorporating iPads in their P.E. workouts and activities.

Coach Shannon Spence puts students in pairs to complete activities that are timed using different iPad apps.

A common activity is a “personal best day” where the students are timed while doing as many repeating exercises they can in 30 seconds. They record their results on a digital worksheet.

“We do it in stations and time each other on the iPads doing push-ups and sit-ups and climbing on the rock wall,” said Noelle Alaniz, a third-grade student at Carl Schurz Elementary.

Beyond timing exercises, the students use the popular iPad fitness app Sworkit. The app allows them to pick their own workout activities while guiding them though the technique.

The students also use an app to keep score while bowling and NFL Play 60, a running and jumping game developed by the American Heart Association and the NFL.

“Trackers and other technologies are so common in today’s fitness regimens that it’s important to expose children to them,” said Coach Spence. “There is just so much out there and I want them to start thinking about it for their future.”

She added that incorporating technology in P.E. class also gives children access to resources that can help them learn new workout skills and techniques at their own pace.

“There are so many new things coming out and as they get older and become adults I want them to be able to know that they don’t necessarily have to know what to do. They can pull something up on their personal device or app and just follow it.”
