Kindergarteners create zoo to learn about animals

WSE kinder students Trevor Luke and Adele Aguilar pose by their zoo display.

Kindergarten students at Walnut Springs Elementary created a "zoo," during their study of animals.

Students began the project by learning about animals' physical characteristics with picture cards and anchor charts. They then chose an animal to write about in their science journal.

The students brought in stuffed or plastic animals from home and built displays around them that included decorations and interesting facts about the showcased animals.

Once the displays were ready, they invited their parents, campus teachers and staff to come visit the zoo and see what they learned. The students even had an admissions booth where they greeted visitors and handed out animal crackers.
