Oak Run Middle School and New Braunfels Middle School have received tennis equipment for their P.E. classes through donations and grants from the United States Tennis Association (USTA).

Oak Run Middle School P.E. coach Judy Kimbell was looking for a way to expand the P.E. classes' tennis activities. She first managed to gather donations from generous tennis enthusiasts that amounted to 25 rackets, balls and a basket.

Kimbell then applied for a grant from the USTA's Net Generation program. The program allows adults to become approved instructors and with an approved provider like Newk's Tennis Academy they became eligible to receive $1,000 in tennis equipment.

Once funding came through, the school received their additional equipment.

"They send you 30 racquets, low pressure balls, and tape in a rolling luggage case, all compact," said Kimbell.

After Oak Run's success, New Braunfels Middle School P.E. coach Justin Ruiz successfully applied for the same grant.

Kimbell mentioned that though the middle schools do not have tennis courts, the equipment is a start to a potentially expanded program.

"We have no courts at the middle schools, so it really helps fill in the gap.  Sometimes the gyms are busy so we play out in the halls," she said.

Kimbell, an avid tennis player with children that received scholarships for playing tennis, hopes that the equipment can give students opportunities that they otherwise wouldn't have access to.

"I wanted other kids to be able to have the same opportunities. Tennis lessons can cost a lot. Here, they are free."

In the fall, the NBISD taxpayers will have the opportunity to fund the addition of four (4) tennis courts at each of the current middle schools as part of the November bond referendum.
