Several New Braunfels High School students attended either Texas Boys State or Bluebonnet Girls State this summer at The University of Texas at Austin and Texas Lutheran University, respectively. The students attended an orientation session at the end of last school year at the American Legion Post 179 and were presented with a certificate to commemorate their participation.

These high school seniors were nominated by their teachers from NBHS and selected by the local American Legion Posts to attend the program.

“The Boys State and Girls State programs are so important to our students and expose them to so many great opportunities. They learn about leadership, public speaking, patriotism, citizenship and numerous government agencies,” said Miller. “Being selected into either of these programs is a privilege and I think the students should be proud to attend.  I encourage all juniors to look into these programs and consider applying.”

According to the program websites (www.boysandgirlsstate.org), Boys State and Girls State are among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school students. Boys State has been a program of The American Legion since 1935 and Girls State was created in 1937. Texas Boys State in year’s past has had more than 1,000 attendees and Bluebonnet Girls State has had more than 500.
