NBHS Science Olympiad team competes at invitational meet

NB Science Olympiad

The Science Olympiad team from New Braunfels High School recently participated in an invitational meet at The University of Texas at Austin.

The following students competed at the event in Austin last month: Skyler Vestal, Rebecca Borchers, Evan Bowen, Jackson Tubb, Catherine Wilson, Rylie Lillibridge, Jennie Smith and Dani Hill.

“The team is comprised of students that love science and compete at various events involving several different science-related subjects,” said Christine Ziese, team co-sponsor and NBHS science teacher. “These kids are a great bunch of young people, and they are dedicated and want the team to succeed. They meet every other week to practice and prepare.”

According to the Texas Science Olympiad (TSO) website, the TSO tournament is a rigorous academic interscholastic competition that consists of a series of individual and team events which students (grades 6-12) prepare for during the year. The competitions follow the format of popular board games, TV shows, and athletic games. These challenging and motivational events are well balanced between the various science and engineering disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers, and technology. There is also a balance between events requiring knowledge of facts, concepts, processes, skills, and science applications.

The next regional competition the NBHS team is preparing for is in March and will be held at Texas A&M San Antonio. The club sponsors are Christine Ziese and Cory Smith. For more information on the Texas Science Olympiad, go to http://outreach.science.tamu.edu/scienceolympiad.php.
