NBHS students work towards CNA certification

A total of 14 students in the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program at New Braunfels High School celebrated the completion of their individual clinical hours on November 27. The students received their Certificate of Completion from Paige Nowlin, RN, their CNA Instructor from Career Academy Training, during a small ceremony held at the school.

"I'm very thankful that we are able to come into the high schools and teach this program,” said Nowlin. “When I was in high school, I didn't have anything like this and I wish I did. These students are very lucky and I'm glad I get to teach them."

By earning the CNA certificate, students are considered college and career ready for state accountability purposes. They will also receive a Performance Acknowledgement on their diploma.

"It provides a foundation for students to gain instant employment and sets them up to have a competitive advantage in further educational or employment opportunities," stated Rachel Behnke, NBISD Director of Career and Technical Education. "We are grateful to Kirkwood Manor for welcoming our students into their facility to complete their required clinical hours. New Braunfels High School has a strong Health Science program and we are thrilled to be able to offer the CNA certification course as a capstone experience."

Aden Burchak, a CNA student at NBHS, appreciated the hands-on training at Kirkwood Manor. "I really enjoyed the experience getting to know the residents and the staff. I loved getting to help others. It just makes me feel like I have a place in the world," said Burchak.

"I've always known that I wanted to help people, and this was my opportunity to start young, and get to know myself and how I can actually impact other people," said Nancy Hernandez, a fellow CNA student from NBHS.
