Young ballerina performs for elementary students

Jordyn Giffen, a student at the NBHS Ninth Grade Center, performs ballet for students at Klein Road Elementary on Dec. 7.

First and second graders at Klein Road Elementary were treated to a ballet presentation on Dec. 7. Music Teacher Cathy Clark invited Jordyn Giffen, who currently attends the 9th Grade Center and has a strong connection to Klein Road Elementary, to perform several dances for the students, including one from Swan Lake.

Giffen is a former student of Klein Road Elementary, and her mother, Maria Giffen, works at the school as an Instructional Aide.

"Every year we study ballet and try to give the kids a better understanding of what ballet really is and this is the best vehicle to use because it's a story they get," said Clark. "It has to be acted out with no talking and no singing, which freaks the kids out in the beginning. This is a very foreign concept to them - there's a story that's totally told by dance."

Jordyn GiffenSpeaking to the students about what it take to be ballet dancer, Giffen emphasized "Dedication, hard work and just eloquence - it doesn't take too much to be a ballet dancer as long as you believe in yourself and work hard in school as well, because you have to keep up your grades. The harder you work and the more you see and not just give up, the better you will become."

Dancer Giffen is a member of the Ballet Conservatory of South Texas and has been dancing for 13 years with hopes to be a professional dancer one day.

"When my mom put me in my first ballet class, straight away it just clicked with me. And once I got older, I saw the grace it brings me, the stamina, the kind of person it made me, so I kept going with it."

Giffen's mother recognizes the effort required by her daughter. "She has sacrificed so much of her usual childhood and teenage social life to be a ballerina. She devotes most of her time that she is not at school to the ballet studio - training, exercising, and perfecting her technical expertise, physical ability, and fitness. I was very honored when Mrs. Clark invited Jordyn to dance at Klein Road. It was an amazing feeling to know that she has done her teachers proud, especially the ones that had a significant role in her life."
