According to the NBHS German Club Sponsor Jennifer Bliss, the students have the option to compete in more than 40 events that encompass music, arts, speaking, dancing, as well as general knowledge of the German language and the culture of German speaking countries. They often compete in sometimes up to 4-5 events.

Pass Auf! is a trivia game that requires the contestants to know about German history as well as historical figures in science, math, art, music, literature, and politics. They also need to know the geography of Germany and other German speaking countries.

Students that compete in the arts events generally need to know a lot about German culture and have to tie that in to their art piece in some way. The original model needs to be a re-creation of something that can be found in a German speaking country. Evan Bowen decided to recreate a castle for his original model, so he had to research the castle and wrote a short report on the back of his model about that castle.

The Puppet Show includes writing an original script in German, creating the puppets, and memorizing the lines, so that they are able to perform in front of the judges.

The Photo Essay includes writing an original story in German and writing it on a poster board with pictures that illustrate the story.

The Video Show was a new event for the students and again included writing an original script in German and then filming the video. The general theme of the Video Show is a documentary or an original screenplay. The Video Show group this year decided to do a historical piece with Bigfoot stealing an actress and falling in love with her.

The Polka Band has to play polka pieces originally written by German speaking composers. The Polka Band was under the direction of Mr. Jorge Flores this year. All of the Polka Band members also competed in Solo and Ensemble on the same day.

“Everyone is truly dedicated and they put a lot of time and effort into their entries,” said Bliss.

For those that have advanced to state, they have the opportunity to use critique sheets from the judges to improve their entry for the state competition.
