2015-2016 NBHS Students of the Month
Outstanding students from New Braunfels High School are honored as the Students of the Month and recognized at the monthly board meeting.
Marissa Young has attended New Braunfels High School all four years of her high school career. During this time she was member of the National Honor Society, on the NBHS volleyball team for two years, a three-year member of the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) where she served one year as HOSA Historian. She also spent one year in the Medical Career Shadowing Practicum, one year in the Pharmacy Technician Practicum and she shadowed in the OR, ICU, Lab, Radiology and Women’s Health Departments at Christus Santa Rosa. She plans to attend The University of Texas at San Antonio as a Terry Scholar. Over the summer, she will obtain her Pharmacy Technician certificate and work as a Pharmacy Tech while she attends college. Her undergraduate course of study will be in Biology where she then plans to attend medical school. Her plans include a residency in Pathology, a fellowship in Forensic Pathology and a career as a Forensic Pathologist. She is the daughter of Ramon and Brandi Young.

Sam Jones has attended New Braunfels High School all four years. Jones, is a three-year member of the NBHS Varsity Swim Team, played NBHS football for one year, and a member of the Blue Crew. He has been a Summer Camp Counselor for T Bar M for two years and participated in the Debutante Escort Program his senior year. After graduation, he will participate in a nine-month mission trip through The World Race where he will visit Albania, the Philippines and South Africa. Upon his return to the States, he will attend Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., to study Music Business. He is the son of Jim Jones and Nancy Aubin.

April 2016 - Cassidy Ohllenbusch and Steven Sanchez
Cassidy Ohlenbusch has attended New Braunfels High School all four years of her high school career. During this time she was member of the NBHS volleyball team for one year and served as a Special Needs Aide. She is a very active member of Sts. Peter & Catholic Church serving as a Youth Leader, a Leader for Teen ACTS Retreats and Confirmation Retreats, a member of the Edge Core Team, and volunteers for Bible Study child care. She has participated in mission trips to Lacoste, Oklahoma and Kentucky where she worked with the homeless and helped repair homes. These experiences have encouraged her to plan on future mission trips this summer to Florida and Haiti. Ohlenbusch plans to attend Northeast Lakeview College and eventually transfer to The University of Texas in Austin. She aspires to become a traveling nurse, continuing her missionary work and helping special needs children. She is the daughter of Brian and Melanie Ohlenbusch.

Steven Sanchez is a two-year member of the National Honor Society and actively involved with athletics while at NBHS. Sanchez was a member of the freshman basketball team, a four year member of the NBHS football team and played on varsity the past three years. He has been on the track team all four years varsity and was named the 2015 District Track Champion for Shot Put and a 2015 Area and Regional Track Qualifier for Shot Put and Discus. He may choose to attend Texas A&M Commerce and walk onto the football team and Track & Field team. Majoring in Kinesiology and minoring in education, he desires to pursue a career as an educator and football coach. He is the son of Shavon Mulkey.

March 2016 - Kennedy Behling and Dylan Castilleja
Kennedy Behling was a four-year member of the NBHS basketball team and played on varsity her senior year. During high school, she also played one year on the NBHS soccer team and was a Unicorn Handler. She was selected in 2015 to attend the Disney Dreamers Academy that only admits 100 of 1000 applicants each year, She is a Mark 9 volunteer at Oakwood Baptist Church working with special needs children and a counselor at Deer Creek Camp’s Friends Week for special needs campers. Behling plans to attend Texas A&M University where she will major in Environmental Design Architecture. Her career goal is to work for Walt Disney Imagineering and to design the attractions behind the magic. She would like to inspire others to dreams the way Disney has inspired her. She states that with the help of dreamers, the world will be a more innovative and impelling place. She is the daughter of Todd and Shana Behling.

Dylan Castilleja has attended New Braunfels High School all four years. Castilleja, an avid music enthusiast, is a four-year member of the NBHS Marching Band and a three-year member of the NBHS Jazz Band. He made All-Region Jazz Band senior year and placed 5th in State on bass his senior year. He is also a two-year member of the Texas Future Music Educators Club, a member of the S.M.A.R.T. Orchestra in San Marcos and the leader of a small jazz ensemble outside of school. He plans to attend the University of North Texas in Denton where he will major in Jazz Studies. After obtaining his bachelor’s degree, he would like to move to New York and work as a jazz musician, while obtaining his master’s degree in Music Education and Jazz Studies. He is the son of Joe and Kristy Castilleja.

February 2016 - Iris Montero and Luke Marbach
Iris Montero is a two-year member of the followings student groups: National Honor Society; the UIL Math team serving as Captain for one year; the Science Olympiad where she served one year as Secretary; and NBHS Cheerleader. She was also a member of HOSA and the Unicorn Handlers. She is part of the two-time State Championship and state-finalist Varsity Tennis team and was voted Most Spirited by her senior class. She is a member of the Sts. Peter & Paul Youth Leadership Team and volunteers at Eden Hill, The Kitchen Table and various senior centers. Montero plans to attend Schreiner University and play tennis, while majoring in Biochemistry. She hopes to become an ENT or Orthopedic Surgeon and would like to volunteer with Doctors Without Borders. She is the daughter of Rigo and Rosalinda Montero.

Luke Marbach is a two-year member of the National Honor Society, a four-year member of FCA and is a member of The Blue Crew. He has been involved with athletics as a member of the freshman football and basketball teams and was named 2015 District Newcomer of the Year as part of the Varsity Baseball Team. He is also a member of Teen Acts and the Leadership Team at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church where he has taken mission trips to Oklahoma, Kentucky, New Orleans and Florida. He has also volunteered at Habitat for Humanity in New Braunfels. Marbach will attend Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) where he will major in Kinesiology and minor in Education. He plans to pursue a career as a math teacher and coach baseball. While at TAMUCC he will have the opportunity to play baseball for the Islanders. He is the son of Ken and Debbie Marbach.

Julie Ricks has attended NBHS all four years. Ricks is a two-year member of the National Honor Society where she is currently serving as President. She is a three-year letterman for the Lady Unicorn Varsity Soccer team and captain of this year’s team. She has participated in NBHS Theater for the last four years and was a Unicorn Handler. In her spare time, she is a member of the Ajax Soccer Club, a member of the Circle Arts Inner Circle “Bringing the Arts to Elementary Schools”, a retreat member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church as well as a choir member and lector. Ricks plans to attend the Business Schools at either Texas Christian University, the University of Texas at Austin or Texas A&M University. She is the daughter of Fletcher and Becky Ricks.

Garrett Malatek has attended NBHS all four years. Malatek is a two-year member of the National Honor Society and a four-year member of the UIL Social Studies Team serving as captain for two years. He is a four-year member of the UIL Speech and Debate team and the UIL Current Events and Issues team where he served two years as team captain and advanced to State. He has been part of the First Tech Challenge Robotics Team and the NBHS Golf team for two years. He attended Youth Leadership of New Braunfels his sophomore year and is currently interning at Micro Power Global as part of his independent study project researching the integration of thermoelectrical chips in solar ovens. A Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout, he has also received the Roger Dolle Award from the City of New Braunfels for Excellence in an Eagle Scout Project. He plans to major in Mechanical Engineering and has been accepted to both Texas A&M and Clemson University. He is currently deciding on which university to attend. He is the son of Greg and Shelly Malatek.

TJ Fumagalli has attended NBHS all four years. During her time at NBHS, she has been a member of the tennis team all four years earning three State Championship Titles for Team Tennis, one State Finalist in Team Tennis, State Champion Title in Mixed Doubles Tennis, and 2 State Finalist Titles in Mixed Doubles. She also played basketball all four years playing two years on the varsity team. She is active in the Youth Ministry at St.’s Peter & Paul and is a part of the Leadership Team in St.’s Peter & Paul Teen Acts Confirmation Program. T.J. plans on attending the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado and will be playing on the women's tennis team while there. She is the daughter of Sabrina and John Fumagalli.
Brooke Merrill has attended NBHS for the last four years. During her time at NBHS, she has been a member of the National Honor Society and Youth Leadership New Braunfels. She also spent the last four as a member of the Key Club, serving as treasurer her senior year; French Club - serving as treasurer her junior and senior year; a member of HOSA her sophomore and senior year, a member of the basketball team all four years and on varsity her senior year and she played club and school volleyball her freshman year. Merrill is also a National Society of High School Scholars member her junior and senior year. Outside of school, she is active in Comal County Relay for Life and the Oakwood Baptist Youth Group. She is still contemplating her college options as she has been accepted to Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor University and Penn State and has applied to SMU. She plans to become a Physical Therapist and work with wounded veterans. She is the daughter of Brady and Melissa Merrill.
Gina Gomez has attended NBHS for the last four years. During her time at NBHS, she has been a member of National Honor Society and Youth Leadership New Braunfels. She also spent the last four years as a member of the dance team serving in the following roles: Freshman Dance Team Captain: Monocera Varsity Dance Team as a sophomore; Monoceras Major her junior year; and Colonel her senior year. Gomez , also a member of FFA, served as Secretary for one year and a member of the State Wool Judging Team all four years. Outside of school, she serves as a Creed Speaker and a Life Teen with Catholic Youth Group. She plans to attend a Texas A&M University and major in Allied Health to study Physical Therapy. She would like to open her own practice or become a physical therapist for a professional sports team. She is the daughter of Fred and Barbara Gomez.

Austin Read has attended NBHS all four years. Read is a member of the National Honor Society and a three-year student council officer serving as treasurer for two years and is the senior class president. He is a four-year member of the Marine Corps JROTC serving as Platoon Commander and Battalion Commander for one year each as well as receiving numerous medals including the MCJROTC Semper Fidelis Medal, Veteran of Foreign Wars Medal and the American Legion Award for Scholastic Excellence medal. Read, the varsity swim team captain, has also received the following awards in swimming: three years All-District, two years All-Regional and one year All-American. OUtside of school, he has earned the classification as a Level One CrossFit trainer and is a graduate of Youth Leadership New Braunfels. He has applied for both the Air Force Academy and AFROTC Scholarship and plans to major in Kinesiology. After receiving his bachelor’s degree, he will apply to the US Army-Baylor University Doctoral Program to obtain a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. He plans to serve his country in the United States Air Force as a Commissioned Officer and Physical Therapist. He would like to pursue a career in Physical Therapy or become a high school AFJROTC instructor and run his own CrossFit gym business. He is the son of Brian and Lisa Read.

Ranjana Vestal has attended NBHS for the last three years. During her time at NBHS, she served one year as Vice President and District Board Representative for Student Council. Vestal is also a member of National Honor Society, a varsity cheerleader and member of the Science Olympiad team. Outside of school she serves as a Middle School Youth Group Instructor/Teacher, a counselor at T bar M and a volunteer at Eden Home. She plans to attend a private university such as Dartmouth, Cornell, Vanderbilt or SMU and major in Film, Architecture and Spanish. She would like to plant a tree in every country and to make people happy. She is the daughter of Charles Vestal and Karudapuram Supriya.

Austin Bergquist has attended NBHS for the past four years. Bergquist is a member of the National Honor Society, an Eagle Scout, a member of the Texas A&M Bio Force for Biomedical Engineering, a NASA High School Aerospace Engineering Scholar, and a 2013 Youth Leadership New Braunfels graduate. He is a two-year Captain and Regional Winner of Speech & Debate and for the past two years has served as the trumpet section leader and competed at the state level as a trumpet soloist. Bergquist plans to attend Rice University and major in Biomedical Engineering followed by medical school for a doctorate in Infectious Disease. He plans to specialize in the treatment of HIV/AIDS and work with the World Health Organization towards the cure and eradication of the disease. He is the son of Eric and Dawn Bergquist
