2016-2017 NBHS Students of the Month
Outstanding students from New Braunfels High School are honored as the Students of the Month and recognized at the monthly board meeting.
Emmalee Custard has attended NBHS for the past four years. She is a three-year member of the Key Club and UIL Choir Solo and Ensemble, a two-year member of the NBHS Varsity Treble Choir, NBHS Varsity Mixed Choir and French Club. Custard has also been a member of the Math Club for one year and a co-leader of the Kitchen Table Computer Class for two years. As an active member of Oakwood Church, she has spent seven years serving with Heart of Hope and Vacation Bible School, six years with the Mark 9 Ministries, and five years with the Fall Festival. She has also helped with the Comal County Fair for six years,Trick or Treat on Unicorn Street for two years and one year with Relay for Life. She plans to attend the University of Alabama in the fall. Her plans are to work for Compassion International and with special needs children. She is the daughter of Jimmy and Monique Lasseter and Brian Custard and Rhonda Jahns.
Brandon Gibson has attended NBHS all four years of his high school career. Gibson was the NBHS-TV Head Producer for one year and spent one year with the Unicorn Band front ensemble .He is an Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar and attended the Texas Legislative Conference in 2017. Gibson also volunteered at Oakwood Heart of Hope Kitchen and was awarded the Walgreens Employee Excellence in Service in 2015. He will be attending his freshman year at The University of Texas at Arlington with plans to then transfer to The University of Texas Austin. He is undecided on his major, but may choose to study Journalism. He is the son of Terry Dean and Marta Ann Gibson.
Lauren McLain has attended NBHS for the past four years. She is a two-year member of the National Honor Society, FCCLA and the NBHS student council with one year as an officer. McLain attended the Global Student Leadership Summit this past summer held in The Hague, Netherlands. She is a member of Freedom Fellowship Church where she traveled on mission trips to Houston and Chicago and she started and lead the “Jump Start” which is a discipleship program for 3rd-5th graders. She has volunteered in the Freedom Fellow Children’s Ministry for six years and is Senior Leader in the Youth Group this year. She also has coached at T bar M Camps for one year. McLain plans to attend Texas A&M University this fall to study education and with plans to become an elementary school teacher. She is the daughter of Piera McLain.
Mitchell Taylor has attended NBHS all four years. He is a two-year member of the National Honor Society, National Honor Society President, a three-year member of the NBHS Varsity Soccer team, and a one-year member of the NBHS Blue Crew. He is a graduate of the New Braunfels Youth Leadership program and a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Youth group. Taylor went on two mission trips - one to an Indian Reservation in Montana and another to Corpus Christi. He plans to attend Texas A&M University and major in Mechanical Engineering. He is the son of Brian and Betty Taylor.

Rocio Medina has attended NBHS for the past three years. She has served for a year and a half as a Special Education Student Aide and worked with Special Education students in dance for three years. Medina is a member of the Friends of Rachel (F.O.R.) Club on the “Shine The Light” Committee and also volunteers at the Food Pantry. She plans to attend Texas Lutheran University in the fall to receive her bachelor’s degree in Education and a Master’s in Special Education. She is the daughter of Raul and Maria Medina.

Jake Ables has attended NBHS for the past four years. He is a two-year member of the National Honor Society, a four-year member of the NBHS UIL Academic Team, and a two-year member of the NBHS French Club. He spent two years on the NBHS basketball team and one year as statistician for the NBHS basketball team. Ables has volunteered with Strike Force Special Needs Bowling for six years and is a two-year member of the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church Youth Program. Ables wishes to attend the University of Texas, Harvard University or Notre Dame University and major in Physics. He would like to receive his Doctorate in Particle Physics and conduct particle physics research at a university, public institution or private institution. He is the son of Ron and Andrea Ables.

Kamerin Smith has attended NBHS for the past four years. Smith is a two-year member of National Honor Society, a 2017 recipient of the Distinguished Honors Achievement Award, Student Council Secretary, Science Olympiad President and a Unicorn Handler. She is also a 2016-2017 Mid-Texas Symphony Debutante, a two-year member of the NBHS golf team, and a graduate of the Youth Leadership New Braunfels Program. In 2016 Smith attended a Human Rights Conference at the Hague. In her spare time, she volunteers her time at The Volunteers in Medicine Clinic, Christus Santa Rosa Hospital, Eden Heights Assisted Living Center, Equessence Therapeutic Horse Camp and a has been a Sunday school teacher at Oakwood Baptist Church for the past four years. She has also attended mission trips to Harlingen, Texas, and San Pedro Suia in Honduras. Smith plans to attend Baylor University in the fall of 2017 and study Medical Humanities and Spanish with goals of becoming a pediatrician. She is the daughter of of Rob and Janna Smith.

Chris Bauer has attended NBHS for the past four years. He is a two-year member of the National Honor Society and a four-year member of the NBHS Marching Band where he has been named Section Leader one year, Woodwind Sergeant one year, and Soloist for two years. He is a three-year member of the NBHS Wind Ensemble Band being named soloist all three years and a three-year member of the NBHS Jazz Ensemble being a soloist all three years. Bauer is a three-year performer with Region 12 Band and an Alto Saxophonist for Region/Area Band for three years. He is a two-year member of the All State Jazz Ensemble and earned 3rd chair his junior year and 1st chair his senior year. He is a four-year member of Texas Future Music Educators and a member of MV Alpha Theta. He performs locally at Freedom Fellowship Church playing Alto and Tenor Sax, Alto Sax at Oakwood Baptist Church and with the Comal Community Band and plays Clarinet with the San Marcos Community Band. He also helps run the sound and video for Freedom Fellowship Church and for “The Box” youth program. His top three college choices are the University of Texas, University of North Texas (UNT) and Berkeley College of Music. He plans to major in Music Performance with an emphasis on Jazz. In the future, he wishes to travel around the world performing professionally. He would also like to be a private lesson music teacher and math tutor. He is the son of Dan and Jill Bauer.

Sarah Scroggin has attended NBHS for the past four years. Scroggin is a two-year member of National Honor Society, a Unicorn Handler and served two years as president of the NBHS FFA Chapter. She also played volleyball and basketball for two years at NBHS. For several years she has shown animals for FFA and led school tours at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo for three years. Outside of school, she is a middle school youth group leader and a vacation bible school helper at her church. She has led multiple church retreats and she went on three mission trips all over the world. Scroggin plans to attend Texas A&M in the fall to study Agribusiness. She is the daughter of Shawn and Eric Scroggin.

Robert Jimenez III has attended NBHS for the past four years. He is a four-year member of the NBHS Marching Band and the NBHS Steel Band. In the band, he served as section leader for three years, drum captain, a four-year member of Region Band, and took his solo to state for two years. He was also a leader in the NBHS State winning indoor percussion ensemble and has been a member of the National Honor Society for two years. Jimenez is a two-year member of the Sts. Peter & Paul Leadership team. He plans to pursue a degree in engineering and is currently weighing his decision between attending The University of Texas at Austin, Texas State University or the University of Texas - San Antonio. He is the son of Robert and Dolores Jimenez.

Cailey Young has attended NBHS all four years. Young is a four-year member of National Honor Society, a 2016 Graduate of the New Braunfels Youth Leadership program, one-year member of the New Braunfels Youth Citizen Council, an American Legion Texas Bluebonnet Girls State Citizen, and a United States Coast Guard Academy A.I.M Participant. During her time at NBHS, she was a four-year member of the track team and volleyball team. She spent two years on the varsity volleyball team and achieved Academic All-District honors all four years. Young is also a member of the NBHS German Club, a one-year member of HOSA and attended the EF Leadership Summit to the Netherlands with Mr. Hyland. Young has multiple opportunities across the nation to continue her education and play volleyball and throw shot put. She wants to major in Physical Therapy and International Studies/National Security as her majors. She is the daughter of Les and Judy Young.

Anthony Parra has attended NBHS for the past four years. Parra played football all four years and has been a member of the NBHS Wrestling team for four years making the varsity team three of those years and qualifying for regionals one year. He is a two-year member of the Technology Student Association, a two-year member fo the National Honor Society and has volunteered with the Lake Dunlap Volunteer Fire Department for two years. He plans to attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott to obtain a degree in Aerospace Engineering. He plans to obtain employment with a private company designing spacecraft after completing his degree. He is the son of Joseph Parra and Deborah Deja.

November 2016 - Kirby Clark and Ben Harmon
Kirby Clark has attended NBHS for the past four years. Clark is a two-year member of National Honor Society, she is the Senior Class President and a Student Council State Team Executive Board Member. She has also served as Student Council Parliamentarian and Student Council Community Service leader. Clark participated in the New Braunfels Youth Leadership Program her sophomore year, served as a NBHS cheerleader for one year, a two-year member of the NBHS Swim Team and served a year as a NBHS athletic trainer. In her spare time, she served as a member of her church band for two years. She hopes to attend Texas A&M University. Her dream job would to work for a college or professional sports team as a dietician and help the athletes. She would also love to be a food blogger and travel the world as a side job. She is incredibly passionate about health and wants to make a difference in people’s lives. She is the daughter of Tom and Chrissy Clark.
Ben Harmon has attended NBHS for the past four years. Harmon is a four-year member of the NBHS Theater Department and Drama Club where he has performed in “Grease”, “ The Importance of Being Earnest”, “Noises Off”, “Death of a Salesman”, and this years rendition of “ The House of Blue Leaves”. He has also spent all four years competing in the UIL One Act Play. Harmon has spent 5-years with the Inner Circle at Circle Arts Theater serving as Sergeant his junior year and Captain his senior year. He plans to attend Oklahoma State University and major in Musical Theater and minoring in Theater Education. He dreams of being a successful thespian on the Broadway Stage and after retirement he wants to continue to inspire other students as a high school theater teacher at a performing arts school or as theater professor at a conservatory for the arts. He is the son of Wendy Harmon and Gennadiy Liberson.

October 2016 - Lacee Mims and Micah Stark
Lacee Mims has attended NBHS for the past four years. Mims is a two-year member of NBHS Key Club, a three-year member of HOSA, and has spent all four years playing Girls Basketball, including three years on the varsity team. She is a Citizen of Texas Bluebonnet Girls State and a member of the Texas A&M University Bio Force Summer Academy. For the last two years, she has been a Sunday School teacher at the Little Gurene Church. She plans to attend Texas Tech University and major in Biology. She is the daughter of Alex and Dee Dee Mims.

Micah Stark has attended NBHS for the past four years. Stark is a two-year member of the National Honor Society, a four -year member of the NBHS Band serving as the current Brass Captain, and a two-year member of the Science Olympiad team. He is also a member of the Boy Scouts of America and a two-year member of the Youth Orchestra of San Antonio. Stark plans to pursue the study of Music Performance after graduation at Northwestern University, Indiana University or the University of Florida. He hopes to become an Orchestral Musician. He is the son of Denise Nelson and David Stark.

Maddie Mack has attended NBHS for the past four years. Mack is a member of National Honor Society, served on Student Council, a two-year member of the Lady Unicorn Basketball Team, a three year Unicorn Cheerleader serving two years as Captain and is the current varsity head cheerleader, and a four-year member of both the Varsity Lady Unicorn Soccer and Unicorn Track & Field teams. She is also member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and is active in Freedom Fellowship Church with the Youth Group. She plans to attend Texas Tech University or Texas A&M University in the fall of 2017 with hopes of becoming a college cheerleader. She plans to major in Kinesiology and pursue a career in Physical Therapy. She is the daughter of Rodger and Kimberly Mack.

Jacob Gaier has attended NBHS for the past four years. Gaier is a member of the National Honor Society, an Eagle Scout, the Student Council Student Body President and an Executive Board Officer for District 18 of Texas Association of Student Councils, and an AP Scholar with Honor. He is a four-year member of HOSA, founder of the NBHSA Inter-Club Council and has been an athletic trainer at the high school for two years. He also volunteers with the San Antonio Rock-N-Roll Sports Medicine Team. He plans to major in Public Health with a Pre-med focus and continue on to Medical School to pursue his dream of becoming an Emergency Physician. He is the son of Norma and William Gaier.
