The Silver Unicorn is intended to provide appropriate recognition of individuals in the community who have rendered outstanding service to the children and youth of the New Braunfels Independent School District. This award is one of distinction and special honor from the District. After the inception of the program in 1965, no more than three awards shall be made annually.

James Bettersworth, David W. Starch, MD, and Yvette Gomez

2019 Silver Unicorn Recipients

James Bettersworth

James Bettersworth ran for the NBISD School Board in 2009 and was elected. He was then re-elected in 2012 and 2015. Serving as Board President during his 9 years on the Board he placed the needs of the District’s students and teachers as his utmost priority.

During his time on the School Board, he was instrumental in meeting with City of New Braunfels personnel and others to ensure successful collaborative ventures, such as site acquisition for the current Veramendi Elementary school and the NBHS competition swimming pool at Das Rec.

He and his wife, Sherry, are active partners, founders and supporters of the New Braunfels Performing Arts Academy and have served in many leadership roles within the Academy.  He has also served on the Board of the United Way of Comal County, including a term as President. He has continually shown his love and commitment to the children and youth of New Braunfels.

Yvette Gomez

A native of New Braunfels and Unicorn graduate, Yvette Gomez has served the students of New Braunfels for the last 29 years until her recent retirement from New Braunfels ISD.

She devoted many of her years to making connections with her students at Memorial Primary and County Line Elementary and is loved by all. During her time with NBISD, she assisted in the classroom with reading intervention, assisting students with emotional and physical needs, and prior to her retirement, was the Idea Lab Instructor where she came to know every student. She has a true gift for making a difference in children’s lives.
Her enthusiasm and passion touched every student she interacted with on a daily basis over the years.

David W. Starch, M.D.

David W. Starch, M.D. has contributed countless hours as the team physician for New Braunfels ISD athletics. His dedication to our 1,500 student-athletes for the past 6 years has ensured that our student-athletes are provided superior medical care.

Under his direction, the Saturday Morning Sports Clinic was founded offering our student-athletes an orthopedic evaluation and X-Rays by sports medicine experts.

Another tangible example of his dedication and willingness to help NBISD is his work with Christus Santa Rosa-New Braunfels.  Through his guidance and leadership, access to an athletic trainer at both middle schools has materialized by ensuring health care providers are in attendance for the games to add an extra layers of safety for our most vulnerable Unicorns.

His tireless contributions and selflessness are shining examples of what exemplifies Silver Unicorns.
