Third-graders from four of New Braunfels ISD’s elementary schools were rewarded with a ride to school on an fire truck after winning this year's fire safety poster contest held by the City of New Braunfels Fire Department. Parker Waltersdorf, the winner from Lone Star Elementary, had his ride the morning of Feb. 15.
Waltersdorf along with Libby Braden from Memorial Elementary, Lauren Pszanowski from Walnut Springs Elementary and Ariana Latham from Lamar Elementary were named campus winners in this year's contest. Each of these students will get the opportunity to ride to school in an NBFD fire truck.
“Parker was so excited the night before,” said Katherine Bowers, Walterdorf’s teacher. "He had his mom email me to ask if I could come out and see him arrive in the fire truck. We decided to surprise him with the entire third grade going out to watch his arrival.”
The poster contest, open to all third-graders living in New Braunfels, centered around the theme “practice fire escape drills in the home.” Beyond a few guidelines, students were encouraged to make the poster their own and even get their families involved.
“Most of the parents I have talked with said that their kids came home and not only worked on the poster, but got the whole family involved in planning and practicing what to do in case of fire or other emergencies,” said NBFD Fire Lt. Michael Skelton. “This is very exciting because the whole purpose was to get kids and families involved in being prepared and staying safe.”
Out of the submissions from each participating school, only one student was chosen as a campus winner. In addition to the truck ride, the winners also received fire prevention branded items, a tumbler and a $50 gift card to a local retailer.
The winning posters are currently on display in the lobby of New Braunfels City Hall, located at 550 Landa Street.
