NBHS Winterguard wins WGI San Antonio Regional

It’s been a great season for the New Braunfels High School Winterguard. A first-place finish at the 2023 WGI Sport of the Arts San Antonio Regional event on March 18 was the latest accomplishment for NBHS.

“This season has pushed my skills above and beyond compared to any other show I’ve spun in. I’m surprised I haven't accidentally broken any Colorguard equipment yet,” said NBHS senior Madison Harrison. “It’s unbelievable that our team has accomplished so much in such little time, and I can’t wait to see how the remainder of our season will unfold.”

At the WGI event, NBHS competed and defeated teams from as close as New Braunfels Canyon and as far as Louisiana. The Unicorns started with the top spot in prelims with a score of 82.020. In the finals NBHS scored an 84.650, scoring nearly two points more than second-place finisher Katy Seven Lakes.

“This has been a historic year for the NBHS Winterguard,” said NBHS Winterguard Coach Kate Williams. “It takes a lot of time and commitment to be successful in the classification our students compete in, and our Varsity Winterguard students this year have amazing talent and work ethic, and have reached every goal we have set.”

NBHS Winterguard has been on a roll taking first place at their first show of the season at the Texas Colorguard Circuit Akins Contest. Then, in late February, NBHS earned a second-place finish at the Texas Colorguard Circuit Ann Richards competition.

Following those competitions, the Winterguard competed in the WGI Austin Regional Finals. In the prelims, NBHS took first place out of 41 teams. They would finish as finalist, sixth overall, in the finals of the WGI Austin on March 5.

Coming up, the varsity Winterguard will be competing  at TCGC Georgetown on March 25. They will compete against 36 other talented Colorguards from across the Central Texas and Houston areas at TCGC State Championships at Texas A&M’s Reed Arena on March 31-April 2.

“We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments so far, and we look forward to ending the season on a strong note at TCGC State Championships,” Williams added.

This year’s accomplishments:
TCGC Akins HS Contest - 1st Place
WGI Houston Regional - Finalist
TCGC Ann Richards Contest - 2nd Place
WGI Austin Regional - Finalist & 1st Place in Prelims Round
WGI San Antonio Regional - 1st Place Champion
