Transportation

Once your children are registered at an NBISD campus, their information is forwarded to the Transportation Department to determine if they are bus eligible. If  eligible they will then be assigned to a bus route. This process will take hours or days depending on the time of year and number of enrollments. Please call your  child's campus to receive this information.

Public school transportation is governed by Texas Education Code, Sec. 42.155. Under this code, a "Regular eligible student" means a student who resides two  or more miles from the student's campus of regular attendance, measured along the shortest route that may be traveled on public roads, and who is not classified  as a student eligible for special education services. The school district may apply for and on approval of the commissioner receive an additional amount of up to 10  percent of its regular transportation allotment to be used for the transportation of children living within two miles of the school they attend who would be subject  to hazardous traffic conditions if they walked to school. Each Board of Trustees shall provide to the commissioner the definition of hazardous conditions  applicable to that district and shall identify the specific hazardous areas for which the allocation is requested. A hazardous condition exists where no walkway is  provided and children must walk along or cross a freeway or expressway, an underpass, an overpass or a bridge, an uncontrolled major traffic artery, an industrial or commercial area, or another comparable condition.

Bus transportation is provided for eligible students to and from the bus stop designated to service the student's residence of record.  Students are expected to ride their assigned bus and load/unload only at their assigned stop.

If a student needs delivery to a grandparent’s residence, a licensed daycare provider, or a court decreed address, an Alternate Transportation Services Request Form must be submitted to the Transportation Department for approval on an annual basis. This process normally takes 2-3 business days.

Transportation does not provide transportation services to the following alternate locations:

• other residences such as a friend's house, babysitter or relative
• businesses including parent's business or place of employment
• after school activities

Parents should make alternate arrangements for students traveling to or from these alternate locations.
