Mykel Hayden, the arts, audiovisual, technology and communications teacher at New Braunfels High School, was honored as this year’s Career and Technical Association of Texas (CTAT) Area 7 CTE New Teacher of the Year. She has been a teacher in NBISD since 2017 and is a second-generation CTE teacher and graduate of NBHS. She worked in graphic design for 11 years in various positions and a few years as a freelance designer before starting her teaching career at NBHS.
“I was freelancing when I stumbled into teaching,” said Hayden. “A former teacher of mine reached out on social media and told me that NBISD was looking for a graphic design teacher. I jumped at the opportunity to share my passion for graphic design. I was hired to teach graphic design at NBHS, my very own alma mater, 20 years after I graduated in 1997.”
Hayden obtained her alternative teaching certificate soon after being hired to teach. She also has a bachelor’s degree in Communication Design (Graphic Design) from Texas State University.
“I’m so grateful that I have found such an amazing position and to have found teaching later in my graphic design career,” said Hayden. “Working with my student designers is truly what I was meant to do, and I am eternally grateful. I truly love what I do.”
Area 7 encompasses a large section of Texas and includes 19 counties. There are a total of 12 CTAT Areas in Texas. State winners advance to represent Texas in the Region IV ACTE (Association for Career & Technical Education) awards program. Region IV recipients advance to the national ACTE award program level.
