NBISD COVID-19 Update for March 9, 2021
03/09/2021

I know that Gov. Greg Abbott’s COVID-19 related executive orders may have caused some concern in our community.  However, the Texas Education Agency announced on Wednesday that, “a public school system’s current practices on masks may continue unchanged.”

We asked all employees and parents to participate in a ThoughtExchange to provide information to the Board of Trustees regarding you preferences on continuing to require masks.

Overwhlmingly, parents preferred to keep mask mandates in place at NBISD by 70%.  Also, employees preferred to keep mask mandates in place at NBISD by 78%.

This means the wearing of masks by all of our employees, students and visitors, social distancing and other protocols outlined in the NBISD Return to School guidelines remain in effect.  Our Board of Trustees support the continuation of the mask guidelines in order to keep our students and employees safe.

I will reiterate that the quarantine guidelines were not changed by the Governor's new order.  We feel that not wearing masks at school would result in large numbers of students and staff being quarantined on a regular basis, which causes great disruption to teaching and learning.

I believe the safety protocols that we have put into place are protecting our students and staff from COVID-19. We are safer, because we have been working together to protect one another by wearing masks, practicing social distancing, washing our hands and implementing other safety practices.

Our families together have made incredible progress and tackled more challenges during one school year than I have seen in my entire educational career.  We have met these challenges with tenacity, grit, reliance and our unwavering  spirit. As we march toward the end of this school year, we will continue to put the safety of our students, staff and families at the forefront of all that we do. We have proven over the past year that we are stronger together, and I have every confidence that this mantra will continue to guide us as we wrap up this semester.

Thank you,
Randy Moczygemba
Superintendent of Schools
