Marsh earns bronze at state, wrestling team caps off strong season

Landon Marsh placed third at the state wrestling championship

The New Braunfels High School wrestling team landed its 6th consecutive state medal as sophomore Landon Marsh brought home third place at state. Marsh also set a school record for the highest ever finish at state by a sophomore, upending his own brother’s record. The University Interscholastic League state wrestling championship was held on Saturday, April 24, at the Berry Center in Cypress, just outside of Houston.

At the state competition, the top-6 finishers in each weight class within each classification earn medals. Marsh competed in the 182-pound weight class at the Class 6A event, the largest classification among schools in Texas.

Though only a sophomore, it wasn’t the first time Marsh has wrestled on the big stage. He made the state meet during his freshman year, when as a team, the Unicorns placed 12th overall.

“The sophomore came to battle,” said NBHS Wrestling Head Coach Adam Sandoval about Marsh’s performance. “After March picked up a 3rd period fall and fell behind early in the quarterfinals, he battled tough against a two-time state finalist in the semis. He then dug deep to earn the bronze medal with a takedown in overtime against his competitor.”

En route to state, the Unicorns did not disappoint at the Region 4 Class 6A Championships, bringing home five All-Region wrestlers. All-Region performances went to James Camreta, Gabby Zarate, Josh Fore, Aiden Valadez and Landon Marsh. Fore and Valadez were selected as alternates at the state meet. Coach Dustin Mlenar was recognized as the Region 4 Assistant Boy’s Coach of the Year by fellow coaches.

At the district meet, which Sandoval says was one of the toughest district tournaments in some time, the girls placed 6th overall with a regional qualifier and three regional alternates. As for the boys, the Unicorns placed 3rd with 8 regional qualifiers, three regional alternates and two district champions, Marsh and Ethan House. Individual finishes at district included:
