COVID-19 Updates for 2021-2022
Curriculum & Instruction Update from NBISD

Dear Parents,

We are excited to have your child as part of New Braunfels ISD! As we embark on this new school year, we are optimistic that the students will not only thrive academically but feel supported and empowered to learn.

After 26 years in education, I can safely say that no school year is the same. Over the past several months we have watched decisions being made at the state and national level that could directly impact what we do here in New Braunfels ISD. With that said, I would like to share with you some of the potential changes and opportunities that are on the horizon with regards to instruction.

Yesterday, during the Texas Legislature’s Second Special Session, our lawmakers passed a virtual learning bill (Senate Bill 15), that now heads to the Governor’s desk for consideration to become law.  Before this legislation was passed, school districts would not be allowed to get attendance funding for students in virtual learning; therefore, limiting most school districts from offering this option to families.

A variety of stipulations surround the bill including:

  • 10% cap based on current enrollment;
  • students must have taken and passed all of their STAAR exams or equivalent assessments from the previous year;
  • students must have earned a C grade or higher in foundation curriculum courses;
  • students cannot have unexcused absences that exceeded 10% of the number of instructional days the previous year;
  • teachers cannot teach in person and remotely at the same time, therefore additional staff would be needed which is not funded by this bill.

As we anticipate additional guidance from TEA, our team continues to engage in discussion on ways to meet the requirements of the bill and any additional funding implications, while continuing to provide a quality education to all students of NBISD.  In addition, we will take into consideration the feedback provided by our parents over the summer and as school has started in regards to remote learning. Thank you, in advance, for your patience and flexibility as we work to determine if this is a viable option for NBISD.

Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction
