Fontenot finishes in top-10 as historic cross country season comes to an end

New Braunfels High School cross-country runner Kennady Fontenot placed eighth at the Class 6A UIL cross-country meet that was held in Round Rock on Saturday, Nov. 6.

"The highlight of the meet and season was and were the performances by Kennady Fontenot," said head coach Lee Datesman. Fontenot took first place at both the district and regional meets. "Incredible one-two punch with Fontenot and Sophomore Lola Daffin. Incredible team chemistry, leadership and work ethic," Datesman said.

It was historic season for Unicorn cross country as both the boys and girls qualified for the state meet in the same season for the first in history.

The boys and girls each finished 16th, respectively. Top-20 finishes at state ends a terrific season for the Unicorns. The girls team finished as district champs, and the team also placed 3rd out of 24 teams at regionals. For the boys, a 2nd place finish at district was followed by a "dark horse" performance at regionals, taking 4th place, according to Datesman.

"Literally no one but ourselves thought it was possible," he said. "(We had an) equally gutsy performance at the state meet." The boys were the second youngest squads competing at state with 2 freshmen and a sophomore among the team's top-5 runners. It was only the second state appearance by the boys and the first since 2015.
