Two Unicorns selected for all-state choir

Congratulations All-State Choir members from NBHS

Posted: Jan. 14, 2022  |  Updated: Jan. 20, 2022

NBHS Choir singers Garrett Starnes, Maddie Kay Wartsbaugh and Adriene Nicolaysen auditioned earlier this month for membership in the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All-State choir. Starnes was selected as a member of the Mixed Choir and Wartsbaugh was selected as a member of the Treble Choir. Nicolaysen was named as an alternate to the Treble All-State Choir.

"Congratulations to these phenomenal young musicians on a wonderful audition," said NBHS Choir Director Caitlyn Gallegos.
Since 1967, only 24 NBHS choir members have made the All-State choir. Starnes earned Bass 2, second chair and mixed all-state choir. Wartsbaugh was named Soprano 1, fourth chair and treble all-state choir.  Nicolaysen was named Alto 2, first alternate and treble all-state choir. This achievement places these choir members in the top 2 percent of students who began the process last fall.
Multiple choir members earning all-state recognition is a somewhat rare feat at NBHS, but in recent years multiple choir members being selected for all-state has become more common. Between 1988 and 2019, there was only one year that multiple Unicorn singers had been selected for all-state choir. This is the third time in four years that multiple NBHS choir members have received all-state recognition.
Each fall, over 70,000 Texas high school students begin the All-State audition process. 1,810 are ultimately selected to rehearse and perform during the annual TMEA Clinic/Convention in one of 18 Texas All-State ensembles, including four choirs: Mixed Choir, Treble Choir, Tenor-Bass Choir, Small School Mixed Choir.

Starnes and Wartsbaugh will convene with the other Texas All-State Choir members during the Texas Music Educator Association’s (TMEA) annual convention at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center from February 9 through 12.  They will spend three days in rigorous rehearsals to prepare the ensemble.  They will conclude their All-State Choir experience with a concert on Saturday, February 12th.
