Home of the New Braunfels Unicorns!
Lone Star Early Childhood Center (Lone Star) has been named as the winner of the H-E-B Excellence in Education Early Childhood Award and will receive $25,000.
“With this money, we will be able to enhance our early childhood learning experience for our little Unicorns,” said Lone Star Principal Heather Salas. “I am so proud to lead this team of dedicated educators - from our custodians and cafeteria workers to our teachers and aides - everyone at Lone Star truly believes in providing a learning environment catered to early learners.”
As for the $25,000, Lone Star also was awarded $5,000 earlier this year for being named an early childhood facility finalist for the H-E-B award. Other finalists included: Bryan’s House, Dallas; Melinda Webb School, Houston; Austin Achieve Public Schools, Austin; and Small Steps Nurturing Center, Houston. Salas said that her staff will be surveyed to determine how to best spend the funds that they have received.
Lone Star was named the winner of the statewide competition during the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards ceremony that was held on April 30 in Austin. Winners are decided by a panel of judges who visit each early childhood facility and talk with administration, staff, parents, and community members.
Since the program’s inception, H-E-B has awarded more than $12 million in funding to benefit outstanding Texas public schools. The H-E-B Excellence in Education Early Childhood Award is designed to support schools that have a focus on pre-kindergarten-aged students. The purpose of the award is to help create and enhance kinder readiness programs that prepare children to enter kindergarten socially and academically ready to learn.
Lone Star is New Braunfels’ premier public preschool campus that offers a full-day pre-k program to all 4-year-olds living within the NBISD. The campus offers a high-quality education that will better prepare each child for success in kindergarten. The campus is home to nearly 300 of the district’s 4-year-olds and was established in 2017. It was specifically designed for early learners and provides a diverse education setting focused on growth academically, socially and emotionally. For more information, visit www.nbisdprek.org.
