Ella Vajdos, a junior pole vaulter for New Braunfels High School, won the bronze medal at the Class 6A University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Track and Field Championships. The Class 6A state meet finals were held on Saturday, May 14, at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin.
Vajdos was up against the top competitors in the state in the largest classification of schools in Texas. She cleared 12-feet, 6-inches at state. Two other competitors, Emily Fitzsimmons of Lake Travis and Jacqueline Rose of Keller, also topped out at 12-6, but Vajdos had earned more points with fewer misses. Vajdos placed only behind Skyler Schuller of Coppell and Molly Haywood of Tomball Memorial.
Abby Morrow, a senior high jumper for the NBHS track and field team, capped off a stellar career with a fifth-place finish at state in 2022. Morrow cleared 5-feet, 8-inches in the finals. Only one high jumper cleared higher than 5-8, and that was gold medalist Riley Ward of Flower Mound. She cleared 5-10.
Morrow placed fifth because other jumpers cleared the 5-8 mark with fewer misses. Last year, Morrow was the silver medalist in the high-jump event, clearing that same height.
