Dr. Gina Christenson joins NBISD

Gina Christenson named Director of Curriculum for NBISD

The NBISD Administration has named Dr. Gina Christenson as the new Director of Professional Learning and Curriculum Development, a position that will be vacant due to the retirement of Lori Gruwell. Christenson is currently employed with Harlandale ISD as the principal at Carroll Bell Elementary. She will start her new role in NBISD on July 1, 2022.

In this director position, she will supervise and manage the curriculum specialist and serve as an instructional leader in the development and improvement of curriculum design, instructional materials and pedagogy. She will also plan and coordinate district professional learning and development opportunities for district staff. 

Christenson shares that she has a deep love for learning and always views herself as a “teacher” first and foremost. She believes all students can learn, excel, and achieve- given the right tools and learning opportunities the possibilities are endless! Christenson shares, “I am honored to be part of the Unicorn family in New Braunfels ISD. New Braunfels ISD is committed to student learning, and I wholeheartedly want to be part of the NBISD mission that includes “Every Student, Every day!”. Supporting the needs of such an outstanding district is quite the honor. 

Christenson has been in education for the past 28 years. During her career, she was a high school teacher, education specialist, campus administrator and principal. For the past three years, she has served as an elementary principal in Harlandale ISD. For the seven years prior, she worked as a campus administrator at two elementary schools in North East ISD and for eight years as an education specialist with the Education Service Center - Region 20 in San Antonio. For the first 10 years of her career, she worked as a high school science teacher at North East ISD and at a public school in North Carolina and Hawaii. 

She has a bachelor’s degree in Science Education from Eastern New Mexico University and a master’s degree in Education from North Carolina State University. She also earned a second master’s degree in Education Administration from Lamar University and her doctorate in Education from Concordia University. She became a National Board Certified Teacher in 1998 and has her principal certification. 

She and her husband, Chad, have two daughters - one attending college at Texas A&M and one entering 6th grade.
