NBISD Board approves 2022-23 budget, approves pay increases

Budget adopted, pay increases approved

The New Braunfels Independent School District Board of Trustees approved the 2022-2023 budget, during their regular monthly meeting held on June 13. The 2022-2023 fiscal year for NBISD runs July 1, 2022 - June 30, 2023.

The Board approved a budget of $118.5 million, which is 5.6 percent more than last year’s budget of $108.1 million. The newly adopted budget includes a general operating fund of $88.9 million, food service fund of $3.7 million and a debt service fund of $25.9 million. 
 
The board also approved several compensation items with the adoption of the budget.

Compensation Highlights:
3-percent pay increase on the midpoint for all employees
Starting Salary of $52,500 for teachers with a bachelor’s degree
Starting Salary of $54,000 for teachers with a master’s degree
Increase in the starting pay rate for aides, maintenance and bus drivers
 
“The budget process began several months ago and includes a comprehensive review of the needs that have been identified to date,” said Dr. Clint McLain, assistant superintendent of finance and operations. “The budget is a living document and changes are made to serve the best interest of the students, their success and their future needs.”  
 
Proposed Tax Rate
 
The district held a public meeting on June 13 to discuss the proposed tax rate of $1.19540 per $100 property valuation for the 2022 tax year. This includes a tax rate of $0.85460 for Maintenance and Operation (M&O) and $0.3408 for Interest and Sinking (I&S). This is a lower tax rate than last year.

According to NBISD Assistant Superintendent Finance and Operations Dr. Clint McLain, the tax rate is not approved at this point in time, however, the public hearing gives taxpayers insight into the proposed tax rate that will be adopted later this summer and will not exceed the proposed amount presented during the public hearing on June 13.
