Award of Excellence presented to NBHS teacher, student

Denise Ortiz is the 2018 recipient of the New Braunfels Masonic Lodge #1109's Mirabeau B. Lamar Award for Excellence in Education

The New Braunfels Masonic Lodge #1109 has awarded NBHS teacher Denise Ortiz (pictured far right) the "Mirabeau B. Lamar Award for Excellence in Education." Masonic Lodges across Texas annually present this Award to teachers who exemplify integrity, possess focus and determination, and have made a positive impact in public education.

According to the award committee, Ortiz’s outstanding work with the College Board and in bringing the EcoRise program to her students, combined with her high expectations for her students, have truly served as a springboard for students to pursue science as a career.

The New Braunfels Lodge also awarded NBHS student Ryland Lane (pictured center) with the Mirabeau B. Lamar Masonic Scholarship. This award is also made annually to a graduating senior who possesses integrity, focus, and determination to overcome adversity in their pursuit of education.

Texas Masonic Lodges have been presenting the Lamar awards since 1988 to celebrate our public school teachers and students. Mirabeau B. Lamar, second president of the Republic of Texas, believed that an educated citizenry was essential to the success of the Republic. He convinced the Texas Congress to set aside 18,000 acres of public land for the creation of public schools, an action that earned him the nickname "Father of Texas Education".
