2021 Silver Unicorn Recipients

Melissa Garffer

Melissa Garffer started her teaching career more than three decades ago, and she’s been a teacher in NBISD since 1993. Professionally, she has put energy and resources into growing within her position. She has a master’s degree in bilingual education, and she is certified as a principal. She always looks for ways to reach her students, including exceeding professional development requirements each summer.

Garffer has been a leader, collaborator and trainer during her career. She also has dedicated her time in the summer to tutor her students in hopes of boosting their abilities to be successful. In addition to being named a Silver Unicorn recipient, Garffer also was named NBISD Elementary Teacher of the Year this year.

Mikie Farias

Mikie Farias is a proud Unicorn alumnus who understands NBISD traditions. Through the use of his camera lens, he not only documents events, but he also helps educate students about the rich Unicorn history. He has attended hundreds of events over the last decade, from home or away Unicorn games to special events.

Students and parents have come to rely on his photographs, many of which he provides immediately after the event, and often for free.
