2019-2020 NBHS Students of the Month

Outstanding students from New Braunfels High School are honored as the Students of the Month and recognized at the monthly board meeting.

  • London Villegas has attended NBHS all four years of her high school career. She is a two-year member of NBHS National Honor Society, where she currently serves as the NHS President. She is a 2 year member of the NBHS Audio/Visual Board Club where she worked in the positions of technical director, instant replay, and camera operator filming football, soccer and other athletic events. She is a one-year member of Learning to Lead and the Creative Coding Club. Through NHS, she has volunteered and participated in Trick-or-Treat on Unicorn Street, Christmas blankets to our custodians, the Valentine’s Day Welcome to everyone at the front entrance of the HS campus handing out candy,  and is currently collecting gifts for the annual St. Jude’s Service Project. She also volunteers at the NB Public Library, the Food Bank and Knights of Columbus Bingo Hall. She is an active member of Tree of Life Church and is currently working at McAlister’s Deli. As a first generation college student, she will be attending Texas A&M this fall to major in visualization (animation program). She plans to graduate with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Visualization and pursue her dream to work for Disney Animations Studios or Pixar. She is the daughter of Abel and Petrita Villegas.

    Gabriel Hernandez has attended NBHS for all four years of his high school career. He is a two-year member of NBHS National Honor Society, a four-year NBHS Bowling Team Varsity letterman, a three-year NBHS Track Varsity letterman, a two-year NBHS Cross Country Varsity letterman, and a member of Business Professionals of America (BPA), where he competed and placed 2nd at Regionals and advanced to State Competition in the Graphic Design Promotion event. Hernandez was honored for being an AP Scholar and Academic All-State in Cross Country. He just signed his National Letter of Intent to  Texas A&M Corpus Christi where he will run cross country and track and pursue a degree in graphic design, marketing or communications. He is the son of Ernesto and Ninfa Hernandez.

  • Alexis Cranford has attended NBHS all four years of her high school career. She is a two-year member of the National Honor Society where she serves as the current Secretary. She is a two-year member of the NBHS Interact Club and currently serves as secretary. Cranford is a four-year member of the NBHS Girls Soccer team, a three-year varsity member and the current Team Captain. She is a Unicorn Handler and a two-year member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church Youth Catechist. She plans to attend Texas A&M University to major in finance and pursue a career as a financial advisor. She is the daughter of Keith and Elsa Cranford.

    George Marsh
    has attended NBHS for all four years of his high school career. Marsh is a two-year member of the National Honor Society and a four-year member of the NBHS Choir including two years as part of the varsity choir. He was named Outstanding Tenor 1, Acappella Men in 2018 and 2019, made the Region Choir, was a Pop Show soloist and has been a guest performer at numerous local events.

    Marsh played football his entire high school career. He is a 3-year varsity letterman and earned Academic-All District honors in 2018 and 2019. In 2019, he was named All-District Offensive Lineman 1st team, two-time offensive player of the game and to the 2019 San Antonio All-Star Football Gold Team 1st Team. In 2018, he was named defensive player of the game twice and to the All-District 26-6A Honor Team and All-District defensive utility player 2nd team. 

    Marsh is also a four-year letterman for the NBHS Wrestling team that was named the District 13 champions in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. He was the Region 4 Wrestling Champion in 2018 and 2019 and was named Academic All-District in 2018 and 2019. He was also a fourth-place medalist at the 2018 6A State Championship and a second place medalist at the 2019 6A State Championship. He received the Hammer (Wrestler of the Year) Award in 2018 and 2019 from NBHS Wrestling and the Newcomer of the Year Award in 2017. 

    He is also a NBHS Track letterman where he threw Discus in 2017 and 2018 and Shot Put in 2017, 2018 and 2019.


    In his spare time, he volunteers with numerous community organizations. He plans to attend Schreiner University and major in business. He would like to make a living as a musician. He is the son of John and Hayley Marsh.

  • NBHS Student of the Month for January 2020 Navi Walker honored at the January 13, 2020, regular Board meeting

    Navi Walker has attended NBHS all four years of her high school career. She is a four-year member of the NBHS Varsity Choir, the NBHS Union Acapella Group and the UIL Mixed Region Choir. She was named to the UIL All-State Choir her junior and senior year and a two-year UIL Pre-Area and Area competition candidate. She is the current president of the Choir Council and is the student director of the varsity choir. She plans to attend Texas State University to major in music education. After graduation, she wants to start as a high school choir teacher before eventually going back for a higher degree and direct college choir. She is the daughter of Nicole Walker.

    NBHS Student of the Month for January 2020, Jeremy Alkire honored at the January 13, 2020, regular Board meeting

    Jeremy Alkire has attended NBHS for all four years of his high school career. Alkire was named a Commended Scholar in the National Merit Scholarship Program and is a two-year member of the NBHS National Honor Society. He has been a member of the member of the Mighty Unicorn Band all four years, the wind ensemble for one year, and also served as a band section leader for one year. He is a three-year member of the HOSA club serving one year as HOSA president and a two-year member of the NBHS Leo and Interact Clubs, serving one year as the Interact Club president. He is a three-year member of UIL Current Issues and Events Team and the UIL Regional Champion of the event in the 2018-2019 school year. Alkire is the founder of the Abuelita Initiative, a volunteer organization. He will be attending Dartmouth College in the fall to study biological sciences and Spanish along with a minor in global health. He plans to attend medical school after completing his studies at Dartmouth.  He is the son of John and Jennifer Alkire.

    NBHS Student of the Month for December 2019 Berkeley Barr honored at the December 9, 2019, regular Board meeting

    Berkeley Barr has attended NBHS all four years of her high school career.  She is a two-year member of NBHS National Honor Society, a member of the NBHS Student Council and is a NBHS Unicorn Handler. She is a member of the NBHS Business Professionals of America (BPA) and is the current chapter President. Barr served one year as a Landa Park Dolphins Swim Team Coach and is a member of the NBHS Varsity Swim Team serving as the current team captain. She was named as a TISCA-Texas UIL Swim Academic All-State in 2019 and is a recipient of the 2019 New Braunfels Rotary Youth Leadership Award. Barr is a graduate of New Braunfels Youth Leadership Class of 2017-2018, a one-year member of Rotary Interact and participated in the Rotary Youth Exchange Summer Program to Switzerland in 2018.  For three years she served as a member of the Hope Presbyterian Church Youth Group, she has been a volunteer with the Oakwood Baptist Church Vacation Bible School and volunteered three years with the Sports Boosters. She plans to attend Moody College of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin to study advertising or radio-television-film with a minor in business. She is the daughter of Goeff and Betsy Barr.

    NBHS Student of the Month for December 2019, Jack Lewis honored at the December 9, 2019, regular Board meetingJack Lewis has attended NBHS for all four years of his high school career. He is an AP Scholar with Distinction, a member of the UIL Academic Current Events Team and a member of the Blue Crew. He is a three-year letterman and the team captain for the NBHS Boys Basketball team and a two-year member of the NBHS Band. He plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin and major in biomedical engineering and then attend graduate school. After graduating college, he aspires to design life-saving medical technology and live somewhere where it snows. He is the son of Bill and Susan Lewis.

    Madeleine Balderrama has attended NBHS all four years of her high school career. She is a two-year member of NBHS National Honor Society and a three-year member of NBHS HOSA. She is a four-year member of the NBHS Marching Band and Texas Future Music Educators where she is serving as the current Secretary/Treasurer and has been a Drum Major for two years. She is a two-year member of the NBHS Leo Club and helped raise $300 for The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event as part of the UIL Academic Competition team.  She is undecided on where to attend college but she is considering the University of Texas at Austin, Rice University or Baylor University and will major in biochemistry. She is the daughter of Melinda Villarreal.

    Clay Coronado has attended NBHS for all four years of his high school career. He is a two-year member of NBHS National Honor Society and a four-year member of the NBHS Unicorn football and baseball teams. He lettered two years in both sports and was named All-District Pitcher for baseball in 2019. He is a youth flag football volunteer coach, volunteered for two years for Rachel’s Challenge and with the Miracle League of San Antonio for baseball. Coronado is currently a Mid Texas Symphony Debutante Ball escort currently and was the 2019 NBHS Homecoming King.  He will be attending Texas Tech University in the fall where he plans to study political science and international relations. He was awarded the Presidential Scholarship for 4 years and he is a Terry Scholarship candidate. After obtaining his undergraduate degree, he will be applying to law school. He is the son of Mark and Mary Coronado.

    NBHS Student of the Month for October 2019 Emma Grace Nowotny honored at the October 21 regular Board meeting.

    Emma Grace Nowotny has attended NBHS all four years of her high school career. She is a two-year member of NBHS National Honor Society and a four-year member of the NBHS FFA where she showed livestock, held chapter officer positions including  two years as President  and made it to the State level of competition. She is  also serving  as Treasurer for the 2019-20120 River District FFA. Nowotny is a member of the Texas Junior Angus Association where she has held several officer positions and participated on many National winning teams. She represented Texas as a voting delegate at this summer’s Jr. Nationals in hopes of being able to run for the National Junior Board in the future. She has attended many leadership conferences through the NJAA and has been very successful in showing high quality cattle all across Texas. She has been accepted to Oklahoma State,  Texas A & M, and Texas Tech Universities. She has not committed yet but she is considering Oklahoma State to pursue a major in animal science production with a double major in agricultural communications.  She is the daughter of Darryl and Meredith Nowotny.

    NBHS Student of the Month for October 2019  Joseph Pickett honored at the October 21 regular Board meeting. Joseph Pickett has attended NBHS for all four years of his high school career. He is a two-year member of NBHS National Honor Society, a three-year member of the National Society of High School Scholars, and was named 2019 AP Scholar with Distinction. He is a four-year member of the NBHS Marching Band, two-year mellophone section leader and a three-year member of NBHS Wind Ensemble playing the french horn. He is also a two-year Region Band member, a three-year member of the Region Jazz Band earning Outstanding Rhythm Player in 2019, a three-year member of NBHS Brass Choir, a three-year member of NBHS Polka Band and a three-year member of  NBHS Horn Choir. He has been a member of Texas Future Music Educators for two years and named a TMEA Texas Music Scholar.  He is a  member of Youth Orchestra of San Antonio and involved in the German Club  where he won regional and state competitions. He is also an Academic UIL Math participant and a member of the TLU Community Music Academy Advanced Choir.  He has been a Boy Scout of America for the past seven years and became an Eagle Scout in 2018. Pickett is a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church serving as an altar server, youth group member and a part of the youth group leadership team. He plans on attending the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University to major in horn performance and a minor in mathematics. He aspires to one day become a professional musician as a horn player in a top orchestra. He is the son of Bill and Debra Pickett.

    NBHS Student of the Month for September 2019  Lexie Leinneweber honored at the September 16 regular Board meeting.

    Lexie Leinneweber has attended NBHS all four years of her high school career. She is a two-year member of NBHS National Honor Society, a four-year varsity letterman with NBHS Track and Field competing in the Pole Vault, 100 meter, 200 meter, 4 x 100 Relay and the 4 x 200 Relay. Leinneweber, a UIL 6A State Qualifier for pole vault in 2018 and 2019 placing 4th, is also a Texas Relays High School Qualifier for Pole Vault for 2018 and 2019 and is ranked Nationally for the Class of 2020 as a Pole Vaulter. Lexie participated in the J.W. Rutledge Leadership Conference in 2017, is a Mid-Texas Symphony Debutante, a two-year Oakwood Baptist Vacation Bible School Crew Leader and a four-year member of Oakwood Baptist Youth Group, and she volunteers with the New Braunfels Food Bank. She plans on furthering her education and pole vaulting career at a Division I University that competes in the Big 12 or the SEC conference and she plans to study communications, marketing or business.  She is the daughter of Paige and Cole Leinneweber.

    NBHS Student of the Month for September 2019 Winston Waldrip honored at the September 16 regular Board meeting.Winston Waldrip has attended NBHS for all four years of his high school career. He is a four-year member and the current Battalion Commander of the NBHS Marine Corps JROTC, a four-year member of NBHS Student Council and the current Student Body Representative to the School Board, currently in the top 1% of his graduating class, a UIL competitor in Current Events, and a member of the NBHS Blue Crew. Waldrip is a graduate of the New Braunfels Youth Leadership Class of 2018, a member of the Landa Chapter of the National Honor Society, a 2019 Texas Boys State Delegate, and an umpire for New Braunfels Little League. He is also involved in Young Life New Braunfels, attends Oakwood Baptist Church and was an escort for the 2019-2020 Mid Texas Symphony Debutante Program.  He plans on attending the Texas A&M Maritime Academy in Galveston, Texas, to major in Maritime Administration. He is the son of Dib and Grace Waldrip.
