Superintendent Updates, Dr. Cade Smith
Update from Sept. 3, 2021
Dear Students, Parents, and Community Members,

I would like to thank you for a great start to the 2021-22 school year. At the beginning of every school year, we are met with unforeseen challenges and obstacles to address, and we cannot tell you how grateful we are for your feedback and support through these first few weeks. We sincerely appreciate your continued partnership as we work together to educate all of our students here in NBISD.

Over the past two weeks, we continue to enroll students into NBISD. Today, our district enrollment sits at 9,603 students.  Here is the total enrollment for each of our campuses:

Lone Star 257
Carl Schurz 354
County Line 373
Klein Road 702
Lamar 360
Memorial         311
Seele 289
Veramendi 878
Voss Farms 710
Walnut Springs 318
NBMS 1275
ORMS 945
NBHS - 9th 745
NBHS 2007
SOC 79

As our district continues to grow, decisions have to be made to address the growth. Many of you have heard about the bond election in November that was created by a Facilities Planning Committee and called by the Board of Trustees. The bond calls for various projects to address capacity issues, updating our older facilities, and a variety of other high-need projects. The projects include funding to expand growing campuses like Klein Road and Voss Farms, build a new elementary school to relieve Veramendi and Lamar, and complete the future Long Creek High School to address our growing high school population.

This bond will also give a few of our older facilities some attention, including the repurposing of Carl Schurz, Phase 1 of the on-site replacement of New Braunfels High School, playground upgrades at our elementary school, and a new press box at Unicorn Stadium. A total of $348 million in projects has been called that could result in a 1.5 cent tax rate increase. You can find all the details of the bond here:

You will soon begin to see opportunities to attend (in-person and virtual) presentations regarding the bond. Once those are set, we will communicate them to you. In the meantime, if you have questions regarding the bond, please do not hesitate to contact us at

From the COVID front, our district dashboard was released at the beginning of the week. We are working to fine tune our reporting protocols and will continue to make improvements to our dashboard as the semester progresses.

One change you may have noticed at the beginning of this school year is our increased presence on social media. For those of you that have Facebook and Instagram accounts, campus accounts have been created to share campus-specific updates, photos, events, and celebrations. Having a social media presence is our way of showcasing all of the great things happening around NBISD. For your quick reference, a list of each campus’ social media pages CLICK HERE. One more communication addition: a page has been created regarding updates I am providing our community. Two updates have been added thus far, and I’ll continue to update these once or twice a month. We’ll also add these superintendent-specific updates to our district social media page and newsletter, but in the meantime, you can read those updates CLICK HERE.

I hope this 3-day weekend brings enjoyment and rest for each of you and your family.  We’ll see everyone back at school on Tuesday. Enjoy the weekend!

Update for August 27, 2021

The 2021-22 school year is underway, and we are off to a great start.  Not only did we open a brand new campus in New Braunfels Middle School, but we also transitioned our Ninth Grade Center to a new location and broke ground on the last project of our 2018 bond; the new elementary campus for Carl Schurz and Seele.

Over the past years, NBISD has done an exceptional job of staying ahead of the fast growth with their facility planning, and that certainly was on display this week. Our growth continues as we enter this new school year. A total of 9,483 students are enrolled in our school district after one week which is an increase of 258 from this same point last year. Families continue to choose New Braunfels, and we are thankful for their trust.

Leading up to the start of the year, our team spent quite a bit of time working on a unified approach in all that we do within our organization. In that work, we believe that starting with an aligned core purpose is paramount to any future success we hope to achieve. The vision of NBISD remains the same: Every Student. Every Day.

However, one item that we have modified is our mission statement to simple reflect:

Engage. Empower. Learn.

We have also developed organization Core Beliefs we hope to instill in each of our students as we work hard to role model each adult. Three Core Beliefs have been established with behaviors that we strive to exhibit, leading to a result. Below are our beliefs, behaviors, and outcomes:

Rooted in history, building a legacy, and growing toward the future

Passion for Growth

Embrace challenges

Adapt and adjust

Get better every day

Be the Best Version of You

Power of the Team

Invest time to listen, care, and connect

Make each other better

Think we not me

Stronger Together

Pride of New Braunfels

Everyone matters

High expectations

Act with purpose

Ready for Tomorrow

We hope that working in this direction will allow us to springboard off the success that New Braunfels ISD has had as we move forward. Again, welcome to the start of the new school year, and it is with sincere appreciation to each of you for entrusting us with your most prized possession.

My very best,

Update for July 19, 2021

First, please allow me to express how grateful I am to have the opportunity to serve each one of you in this exceptional district.  Since coming to New Braunfels, the welcome our family has experienced has been incredibly humbling. So, again, a sincere “thank you” for allowing us to be a member of this remarkable community.

For our district to serve our community at the level you deserve, it is no secret that exceptional two-way communication is a must. Therefore, not only do we need to provide opportunities to hear from you, but we also need to keep you up to date on everything happening in New Braunfels ISD.  This message is our first attempt to provide you specific information personally, and it is more or less an ongoing State of the District.

Right now, most certainly, the burning question surrounding our district is simply:  “What does this upcoming school year look like?”  From remote learning to virus prevention protocols, everyone wants to and deserves to know how we intend to keep each individual as safe as possible while providing the best education possible to our students.  Our team has been and continues to work diligently on our back-to-school guidelines and procedures. We aim for a release date for this information to all students, parents, and community members by August 1st.  Look for that information in the next few weeks.

While I have met many of you during my first month here, there is a vast amount of you I have not yet had the opportunity to meet.  Over the next few weeks, you will begin to see opportunities for us to come together and say hello.  We’re working on dates ranging from early mornings to lunches to late afternoons and evenings that we hope to send out very soon.  Our first event will be on July 26th from 5:00-6:30 p.m. at the NBISD Administration Center. I hope to see as many of you as possible during the next few weeks.

I hope the summer months are off to a good start and continue to march in that direction.
